SECTION IV BOYS BASKETBALL: GREENE'S FREE THROW SHOOTING COSTLY TO S-VE IN PLAYOFF OPENER (2020-02-25)

Tioga County Sports Report
GREENE — The charity stripe was anything but charitable for S-VE as the 13th-seeded Panthers fell to No. 4 Greene, 58-47, in the first round of the Section IV Class C playoffs here Tuesday.

S-VE only missed one free throw, but only attempted six while the Trojans were 27-for-33 on the night. Greene went 16-for-18 in the fourth quarter to create a little bit of space and avoid an upset.

The upset-minded Panthers would grab a 22-20 lead at halftime behind nine points from Marcus Brock and six more from Matthew Byrne. Byrne's points came on a pair of 3-pointers and Brock added a trey as well. Noah Mack and Blaine Whitmarsh added four and three points, respectively, to the effort.

Nate Barry paced Greene with eight points at the break. Barry, who scored 14 in a 62-44 win over S-VE in early December, would finish with a game-high 26 markers this time. He would chalk up 11 points in the third period to carry the Trojans to a 38-37 edge.

Brock had a pair of threes in the third and James Sutherlin added one in the fourth, but S-VE couldn't offset the Trojans' performance at the stripe during the final frame. Barry, Drew Erickson and Nate Parker combined to drain 16 of 18 foul shots.

Overall, Barry went 11-for-13 at the line while Erickson went 11-for-12 and Parker was 5-for-6.

Brock led S-VE with 15 points, including three threes, and also had two steals. Byrne added 10 points, including two treys, seven rebounds and two steals; Mack scored nine points to go with five boards, two assists and a block; Sutherlin chipped in with six points with one three, five assists, four rebounds and four steals; Matt Merrick had four points; and Blaine Whitmarsh added three points and a block.

The Panthers finish the season with a 9-11 record.
