IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY LANDS 6 DIVISION ALL-STAR SELECTIONS (2020-02-23)

NEWARK VALLEY — IAC Large School champion Newark Valley didn't get to 20-0 this season without a talented lineup. So, it should come as no surprise that the Cardinals have garnered six IAC South Large School all-star selections.
Junior Mackenna Nechwedowich, and sophomores Hannah Ferguson and Grace Gardner have been named to the first team. Juniors Bri Beebe and Allie Wandell are second team selections. Senior Kendra Morris rounds out the group, receiving an honorable mention.
Nechwedowich averaged 12 points per game, but was equally as vital in other areas. She led the team in rebounding (7.8 per game), blocks (3.7 per game) and assists (3.5 per game).
Ferguson averaged 9.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She also contributed 25 3-pointers.
Gardner was third in scoring with 11.5 points per game. She also averaged six rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.1 steals per contest.
Beebe led the team in scoring, putting up 13.5 points per game. And she did it by posting team highs in threes with 48 and free throw percentage (70 percent). She also averaged three rebounds, 2.6 steals and two assists per game.
Wandell helped the NV effort with 7.7 points, 4.9 boards, 1.6 steals and 1.5 assists per game. She was third on the team in threes with 21.
Morris's ability to run an offense, her ball-handling skills and her presence on defense overshadowed her lack of size and statistics. She was second on the team in steals, averaging 2.2 thefts per game. She also averaged 3.6 points, 2.2 and 1.8 assists.
All-stars are selected by a vote of the coaches in each division.
The Cardinals are the third seed for the Section IV Class B playoffs. NV moved up to No. 4 in the state rankings released earlier this week.
