OWEGO — When Owego and Ithaca met in the Stop DWI Classic back in early December, the Little Red won, 47-36. Boy, how things changed over the past two months.
The Indians exploded for 22 third-quarter points to pull away for a 62-42 STAC victory here Tuesday evening.
"Best half of the year," Owego coach Chris Evans said of the second half). "Made shots and continued the tremendous defensive effort. Great team effort."
Brendan Evans nailed a trio of 3-pointers, scoring 10 points in the quarter, and Mike Wasyln added eight more as Owego doubled its first-half output, turning a six-point lead into a 44-23 cushion.
Evan Hamed added two treys in the fourth quarter, giving him six on the night.
Both teams started the game slow offensively with two Mike Wasyln baskets and a Hamed three accounting for the Indians' points in a 7-7 standoff.
Hamed tossed in three more long-range buckets in the second period as the Indians surged in front at the break, 22-16.
Hamed led Owego with 20 points, Mike Wasyln scored 18 and Evans had 10. Devon Johnson added four points, and Mason Rieg, Nate Bennett, Brady Clark, Cam Doane and Nick Wasyln contributed two points apiece.
Justin Yearwood led Ithaca (9-8) with 13 points.
Owego (9-8) visits M-E (15-2) tonight.
