SPENCER — Candor and S-VE engaged in a physical — and mostly defensive — battle here Tuesday night before the visiting Indians pulled away for a 37-28 IAC South Small School victory.
Candor led 7-5 after the first quarter and 14-11 at the half.
Heading into the final frame, the Indians would hold a 22-18 advantage.
Braelyn Hornick scored eight points in the last period. She made both of her free throw attempts as the Indians would go 7-for-10 at the stripe to seal the victory. Jennah Kareem added a field goal and went 3-for-4 at the line and Brooke Wilcox made both of her foul shots.
Candor made nine of its 12 free throw attempts in the second half and finished the game 13-for-21. S-VE attempted just four free throws.
Sophia Dutra scored all of the Panthers' points in the fourth quarter.
Hornick scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. She also had three steals.
Kareem pitched in with seven points, 12 rebounds and three steals; Kadrianna Foster had three points, four rebounds and four steals; Brooke Wilcox added three points and eight steals, and Shelby Swartz added two points, six boards and five steals.
Dutra led S-VE with 15 points, six blocks and five rebounds, and Tara Perkins chipped in with six points and five boards. Paige Grube had three points, three assists and three steals; Sam Deppe added two points, six boards and three blocks; and Madelynn Pasto had two points.
Candor visits Groton Thursday while S-VE hosts Moravia.
