NEWARK VALLEY — Ethan Bigelow hit two big 3-pointers in overtime, including the game winner, as Newark Valley defeated Edison, 61-60, here Tuesday night.
In the OT, the Cardinals were down four with just under a minute to play when Bigelow drained a three from the top to put NV within one.
"With 14 seconds to play, we abbreviated one of our set plays to try to get a good look," NV coach Scott Stratton said. "Right from the start the screen was solid, and then the pass and catch were good, and finally Ethan’s shot was perfect."
Newark Valley had to pull off a comeback at the end of the fourth quarter as the Cardinals were down three with seven seconds to play.
"The play we drew up didn’t get us the exact look we wanted, but Caden (Bennett) made the most of it, launching the ball from 25 feet to tie the game at the end of regulation," Stratton said.
Bigelow nailed two treys in the first quarter and Donavin Beebe added four points as the two teams went into the second quarter tied at 11. Bennett put in two baskets and Brenton Rosenberg added three points as NV grabbed a 22-21 halftime edge.
Bennett scored six points and Riley Malone five as the Cardinals went up, 38-32, heading into the fourth quarter, but the Spartans pumped out 19 points to rally in front before Bennett's bucket sent the game into OT.
"A lot of guys stepped up tonight to help us get this win,"Stratton said. "Riley Malone had a season-high 13 points and was a beast on the boards. Caden Bennett used his quickness and strength to take advantage of several matchups. And Ethan Bigelow was feeling the three-point touch early and then late in the game.
"All in all, three guys scored in double figures for us tonight. We’ve struggled lately to put the ball in the basket, but tonight we got the extra scoring we’ve needed, and we put up a win at home."
Malone had 14 rebounds, including six offensive boards, and recorded his first double-double of the season.
Bennett and Bigelow scored 14 points apiece. Beebe, in addition to eight points, cleared 11 rebounds. Raidyn Ford added seven points and Rosenberg tacked on five more.
Jack Hourihan led Edison with a game-high 21 points, including five threes.
