ODESSA — Candor dropped a 48-43 IAC South Small School thriller on the road at Odessa-Montour Monday night.
Down as much as 14 in the second half, the Indians cut the lead to one in the final minute but were unable to push through for the victory.
Odessa took the first quarter, 16-12, in a back-and-forth affair that had nine different players scoring. Braelyn Hornick put in five of her game-high 17 points for Candor, while Sara Gardner scored five of her team-high 15 for Odessa.
Odessa would extend its lead to 10 at the half on the strength of JoLynn Minnier's six points. Hornick added another four for Candor, which entered the half down, 30-20. Both teams suffered from foul trouble in the very physical quarter.
The third quarter opened with Odessa extending its lead, but Candor kept pace to enter the final stanza down, 39-28. The fourth quarter contained the game's most excitement as the Indians fought back with a 13-2 run in the final six minutes with an opportunity to take the lead. Jennah Kareem scored nine points in the frame, and Hornick put in a field goal from the lane to cut the lead to one point with 1:05 remaining. On the next two consecutive possessions, the Candor defense came up with steals but turned the ball over on violations.
Odessa converted a tough layup with 32 seconds remaining to lead by three. The Indians came down with a chance to tie and narrowly missed a three from the corner. Odessa took a long-distance layup off the defensive rebound for the final margin.
Odessa was led by Gardner's 15 points. Kara Reese had 12 and Minnier 11.
For Candor, Hornick added 12 rebounds to her 17 points for her ninth double-double of the season. She also had five steals. Kareem joined her teammate with her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 and pulling down 10 boards. She also contributed a season-best seven steals. Brooke Wilcox had seven points and six rebounds. Kadrianna Foster, Kilie Streeter and Shelby Swartz each had two points a piece. Swartz also finished with seven rebounds.
