IAC WRESTLING: NEWARK VALLY BOASTS FOUR CHAMPS, FINISHES SECOND AT LEAGUE TOURNEY (2020-01-18)

BY TIM TAYLOR
Tioga County Sports Report
WAVERLY — Newark Valley was dominant in the majority of the upper weights at the IAC Wrestling Championships here Saturday, which propelled the Cardinals to a runner-up showing.

By winning three of the five heaviest weight classes, as well as a fourth title at 132 pounds, NV would finish the tournament trailing only defending state champion Tioga in the team challenge.

The Tigers, who crowned five individual champs, scored 218 points to NV's 166.5. Defending champion Waverly was third with 149.5.

With the championship finals being wrestled on two mats and starting at the lightest and heaviest weights, NV's first champion of the day would be 220-pounder Josh Duke, who pinned Tioga's Dom Wood with a headlock at 1:20 of the first period.

Next up was Joey Woodmansee at 195 and he posted an 8-4 decision over SVEC's Jacob Campolito.

Two matches later, Cam Carrier gave the Cardinals their third champ as he pinned Dryden's Vincent Scott in 3:31 to end a battle at 170. Carrier trailed, 4-1, about midway through the second period, but was able to reverse Scott and put him to his back.

That trio has been able to work out together in the practice room at times and they've learned to feed off one another.

"For the most part, they're practicing with each other and there's some good battles in the room," Daly said. "That definitely helps. It helps a lot."

There's no jealousy amongst the trio, but they do want to enjoy the same success — or more — that their teammate is experiencing.

"They all get along very well and if things get a little rough, chippy, or whatever in the room and they're fine. Ten minutes later, the next day, they're all good, because they're all friends. That helps, because they're able to get past those things and get right back in the battle again."

Carrier went 4-0 on the day, Woodmansee was 3-0 and Duke was 2-0.

NV would tack on one more title when Josh Post topped top-seed David MacWhinnie of Tioga, 7-2, at 132.

He had a loaded weight class with MacWhinnie and SVEC's Ousmane Duncanson. It was tough going for a while in the final and an even tougher battle in the semifinals against Duncanson.

"He's wrestling well. He's a tough kid," Daly said. "He's not real happy with himself right now. He wants to prove that he can open things up a little more.

"I thought he did a nice job in the finals. That got a little bit messy, but he did a nice job with that first takedown, running that bar. You get up by five against a kid of that caliber and then the match is a totally different match. I thought in the finals he looked good.

"The kid in the semis poses some different threats and we knew and I think maybe the win earlier this year had us a little over-confident. Holy cow, for an eighth-grader, that kid is something special, and he's going to be something special if he keeps getting after it and doing the right things. It was a good match to see and the kid (Post) is a workhorse, so he's going to go back and figure things out and fix things, and continue to do what he does."

Post was 3-0 for the tourney.

The Cardinals had one runner-up in Connor Jacobson, who lost in the 160-pound final to Waverly standout Ethan Stotler by a 14-1 major decision. Jacobson was 3-1 on the day.

Kamden McCall (145) took fourth, dropping a high-scoring 16-11 affair against Jordan Canniff of Whitney Point. McCall wen 2-2 for the event.

Mark Vosburgh (120) placed fifth, scoring a 2-0 decision over Edison's Angelo Steinhauer. It was a measure of revenge for a 1-0 loss earlier in the day. Vosburgh won three of his five bouts.

Andrew Post finished sixth at 113, falling by pin to OM/WG's Brandon Davis by pin in 1:39.

Also competing for NV were Noah Waterman at 138, Jacob Hartford at 145, Peter Basti at 152 and Nate Demmer at 170.

Newark Valley returns to dual meet action Wednesday when it hosts Dryden in an IAC Division I match.
