IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR DOWNS SOUTHERN CAYUGA IN OT (2020-01-18)

POPLAR RIDGE, N.Y. — Candor pulled off a 43-37 overtime thriller against Southern Cayuga in an IAC Small School crossover game here Friday evening.

Knotted at 35 at the end of regulation, the Indians received eight points from Jennah Kareem and Braelyn Hornick in the extra frame to seal the victory. That duo combined for 33 points and 29 rebounds on the night.

The Chieftains took the lead early in the game with an 11-9 first-quarter effort. Candor got seven points from Hornick, including her first of two 3-pointers. The Indians would battle back with a 14-8 second quarter to lead, 23-19, at intermission. Kareem and Brooke Wilcox scored four points apiece while Hornick added another six.

It looked like Candor would take command to start the second half as it extended its lead to eight, but Southern Cayuga would get threes from Kaley Driscoll and Lillien Colton to enter the final stanza only down 33-28. Candor would be held to a lone Wilcox field goal over the last eight minutes of regulation.

In overtime, the Indians got an offensive spark as Kareem found the net on three tough layups.

Southern Cayuga was led by Avrey Colton's 11 points and Driscoll's nine.

The Chieftains shot 6-for-18 from the free throw line while Candor was 11-for-16.

Hornick and Kareem each registered double-doubles. Hornick scored a game-high 17 points to go with 14 rebounds, three assists, and four steals.  Kareem netted 16 points along with 15 rebounds, two steals and a block. Wilcox scored eight with five rebounds and two steals. Kilie Streeter scored two points, grabbed four rebounds, dished out five assists and had four steals. Meckenzie Marsh pulled down six rebounds.

Candor is now 4-8 overall but 4-3 in IAC Small School play. The Indians host North Small School division leader Union Springs (8-3) Friday.
