STAC WRESTLING: OWEGO DRAWS 6 TOP-FOUR SEEDS FOR LEAGUE TOURNEY (2020-01-16)

JOHNSON CITY — Owego's Cam Bundy will defend his 170-pound title when the STAC Wrestling Championships get underway here this evening.

He is one of two returning place-winners for the Indians, Matt Laubach being the other. He finished fourth at 99 a year ago.

Bundy (21-3) will be the third seed behind Norwich's Mikey Squires (23-2), the No. 1 ranked Division II wrestler in the state according to New York Wrestling News, and Windsor's Langdon Sibley (21-3). Bundy and Sibley met at the Windsor Christmas Tournament with Sibley winning, 2-0.

Laubach (23-5), competing at 106, is seeded second. He has only lost to one STAC foe, Corning's Riley Walker (20-8). Walker won by fall in December, but Laubach took a 10-9 decision 12 days ago. Chenango Forks' Tyler Ferrara (21-1) is the top seed.

Four other Indian grapplers are seeded third. They are Jacob Morris (13-7) at 132, Matt Gatto (15-7) at 160, Tyler Benjamin (20-2) at 182 and Logan Bailey (16-6) at 285.

Bailey is seeded behind the two top-ranked heavyweights in the state, Forks' unbeaten Lucas Scott (Division I) and Norwich's Tyler Rice (Division II).

Benjamin will most likely run into Windsor's Gabe Monroe (20-2) in the semifinals. Monroe was ranked No. 1 in Section IV Division II before being upset by returning state placer Mitchell Knapp (26-2) of Susquehanna Valley Wednesday.

Morris is seeded behind a pair of Division I wrestlers in Drew Witham of Corning and Horseheads' Calum Houper.

Gatto is seeded behind Dave Flora of Windsor and Jarrett O’Connell of Horseheads, who battled into overtime at the Windsor Christmas Tournament. Gatto did not compete in that event.

Windsor has seven top-four seeds, including four No. 1s. Forks has seven top-fours and three No. 1s, defending champ Norwich has five top-fours and three No. 1s and Horseheads has nine top-fours, but just one top seed.

Returning champs joining Bundy are Ferrara, Norwich's Dante Geislinger, Johnson City's Dante Rigal, Forks' Logan Gumble, Chenango Valley's Colston Volpe, Squires, Monroe, Windsor's Brandon Butler, Scott and Rice.

Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. at Johnson City High School and resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.
