IAC WRESTLING: SVEC BATTLES HARD, COMES UP SHORT AGAINST TIOGA (23 PHOTOS) (2020-01-15)

TIOGA CENTER — Last year, Tioga and SVEC never had a chance to face off for the IAC Division I dual meet title due to the winter weather. This year, with it almost impossible to find any snow in the area, the two teams had no problem squaring off.

With some regulars sidelined on both sides, and a little bit of juggling going on, the Tigers moved a step closer to winning their third consecutive division title, posting a 54-33 victory on Senior & Parent Recognition Night.

Overall, Tioga coach Kris Harrington was pleased with the team's performance, including a couple of newcomers.

"I think that Mason Booser and Ethan Agan, they're in a month of wrestling and to have them fill in a lineup, I feel good about that. I think they're doing a great job," he said. Both wrestlers got their first taste of competition last week and have combined to wrestle nine matches.

The Tigers received an impressive showing from senior Jacob Welch, who missed the end of the 2017-18 season and sat out the 2018-19 campaign.

"Jacob Welch got a fall tonight, and seniors have to lead," the coach stated.

In fact, the six Tioga seniors who took the mat picked up four bonus-point victories, three of them falls. Joining Welch with pins were David MacWhinnie and Dom Wood while Brady Worthing won by injury default.

Worthing, a defending state champ, was ahead of Parker Sexton, 4-2, and was attempting a takedown when the returning Section IV runner-up suffered an apparent knee injury. It's been a rough season for the SVEC senior. He missed several weeks after suffering a shoulder injury in the first tournament of the season, then missed another tournament recently. Coming off a first-place showing in the Cazenovia Invitational, Sexton was wrestling in just his 12th match of the season.

"I hope Sexton is doing alright," Harrington said. "That's not the way we wanted that match to go, obviously."

Aside from the injury to Sexton, SVEC coach Jesse Buck was happy with his team's performance.

"Tonight, I was really happy," he said. "We didn't have everybody either.

"Everybody knows how good Tioga is as a wrestling team, but each of our guys went out and they didn't shy away from anything. They went right after them; really, really proud of that. Everybody just had the mindset they'd go out there and compete and they did. The mindset's there. Really for us, just working on situational awareness, because a couple times people got scored on and it it could have been really easy to avoid. That's something we can tweak heading into the end of the season."

The Eagles brought a little more experience to the mat in the upper weights and it showed as they took four of the first five bouts. The lone exception was at 220 pounds, where Tioga's Dom Wood pinned Anthony Speer in 1:05.

Nick Tubbs got SVEC started with a fall over Josh Snell in 1:14 in the first bout of the match at 170.

Camrin PiPrimo and Booser squared off in what was arguably the thriller of the evening at 182.

DiPrimo scored the initial takedown and led, 2-1, after a period. Booser picked up a penalty point and scored his second escape of the match to grab a 3-2 edge heading into the final period. DiPrimo would notch a reversal in the third period, but couldn't hold Booser down. With the score tied at four, DiPrimo scored a takedown with 34 seconds remaining and held on for a 6-4 win.

Jacob Campolito (195) recorded a fall over Aaron Howard at 195, giving SVEC a 15-0 advantage.

Following Wood's pin, John Hammond (285) decked Cole Williams in 2:23 to make it 21-6 heading into the lower weights.

The Tigers' Gianni Silvestri (99), Caden Bellis (106), Emily Sindoni (113) and Donavan Smith (120) received forfeits, putting the home team up for good, 30-21.

Welch (126) made it five wins in a row for Tioga, dispatching Kamren Lehman in 3:35 to push the score to 36-21.

Ousmane Duncanson (132) put SVEC back on the scoreboard with a fall over John Woodcock in 1:11, closing the gap to 36-27.

The Tigers would win the next three bouts to lock up the victory, building a 54-27 cushion.

Justin Hopkins (138) pinned Tyler Knickerbocker in 2:49 and Emmett Wood (152) stopped Jacob Boda in one minute flat.

In between, Worthing recorded the injury default over Sexton.

"He's probably going to have to go get it looked at," Buck said. "It definitely looked a little ugly coming down. It's a shame, coming off a shoulder injury too. It's hard for him to get in stride with all the injuries, but he's a tough kid, a very tough kid."

The Eagles' Devin Beach pinned Ethan Agan in 1:45 to end the night.

Tioga, which has won 16 consecutive division dual meets, improved to 3-0 in the division and 5-0 overall and has division matches remaining with Dryden and Whitney Point, who occupy the bottom two spots in the standings. SVEC (9-7, 2-2) has one division match left with Waverly.

The IAC championships will be held Saturday at 9;30 a.m. pending the weather. The host Wolverines are the defending champs. Tioga, the 2018 champ, did not compete last year due to the state duals.

"We're just starting to build a little bit," said Harrington. "We had two of our better guys out today. It will be nice Saturday to have a full lineup."
