IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE FALLS TO WAVERLY (2020-01-14)

Tioga County Sports Report
WAVERLY — After being held without a basket in the first quarter, Waverly picked things up to pull away from S-VE for a 57-19 IAC South crossover victory here Tuesday.

Sidney Tomasso lit a fire under the Wolverines with an 11-point second-quarter effort after the home team had managed only a pair of Olivia Nittinger free throws in the first quarter.

Tomasso was the only Wolverine to score points from somewhere other than the free throw line as Waverly grabbed a 16-6 lead at intermission.

"We started out playing well and Waverly was having difficulty scoring in the first half," S-VE coach Abby Gentile said. "We could not get comfortable all game on the offensive end. Their ball pressure was more than we have experienced and this took us out of our flow to the offense."

Waverly put the game away with a 23-point onslaught in the third period with Tomasso scoring 10 more points. She would finish the night with a game-high 21 points, including three 3-pointers.

Morgan Adams added a trey and three free throws in the third, Nittinger had a trey, and Alyssa Sindoni and Paige Lewis added two free throws each.

Nittinger and Kennedy Westbrook canned one three apiece in the final frame, giving the Wolverines seven buckets from downtown. Westbrook had five points in the period and Sindoni tacked on four.

Adams and Nittinger contributed eight points each to the win, Westbrook, Sindoni and Lewis chipped in with six points apiece, and Lourden Benjamin added two more.

The Panthers' Tara Perkins scored all of her team-high eight points in the third quarter. She also added seven rebounds to her stats. Paige Grube had five points and five boards, Sophia Dutra had four points, Ava Bruehwiler pitched in with two points and Hannah Martinez snagged five boards.

S-VE travels to Groton Friday.
