IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: S-VE UNABLE TO STOP WAVERLY STANDOUT IN LOSS (24 PHOTOS) (2020-01-14)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — Scott Woodring brings another dimension to Tioga County basketball — more than 6 1/2 feet of it. S-VE was well aware of that, but like most teams, was unable to put a stop to the 6-foot-8 standout in a 66-40 IAC South loss here Tuesday.

Woodring scored 30 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the Wolverines through a sluggish start and onto their ninth win in 10 outings.

The Panthers actually got the upper hand at the start, grabbing a 17-15 edge after one period of play. A trio of 3-pointers, one each from Matthew Merrick, Marcus Brock and Matthew Byrne, highlighted the early lead.

Byrne put in seven points in the quarter and Brock added five, and the S-VE defense held Woodring to six points. Caden Hollywood scored four points for Waverly and Peyton Bowen hit a three.

"I'd like to start the games a little bit better than we have been," Waverly coach Lou Judson said. "Our first quarter, for some reason we come out of the gate not playing well and then we wake up and usually play a good second quarter, and usually finish off the game OK."

Woodring would find his groove in the second quarter, collecting a dozen points as he dominated underneath. The Waverly defense stepped up as well, containing S-VE's offense to just five points.

"They're 12-1 for a reason, 13, or whatever it is," said S-VE coach Jeremy Kastenhuber. "They're very good. Lou does a great job preparing his guys. We know they're athletic.

"Woodring's a load. He's a big kid. We had a solid game plan. I didn't feel like we executed our game plan as well as we could have, but either way, he's tough to stop down there. It's one of those things where your biggest kid is 6-2, he's 6-8.. He's going to have a little bit of freedom to do what he wants down there I guess."

With the Wolverines sitting on a 34-22 advantage, Woodring tacked on another 11 points in the third period and Waverly would carry a 49-33 lead into the final frame.

Judson thought his team was a little sloppy in the second half.

"Too many turnovers, but all in all you've got to be happy with a 20-plus point win on the road at Spencer where it's very difficult to play," he said.

The visitors went 9-for-12 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, and received one trey apiece from Nick VanHouten and Austin Ellers.

"We didn't shoot it well from three," Judson said. "We haven't been, but Scotty's such a dominant force inside. He gets to the free throw line a lot. He didn't shoot well from the free throw line tonight, but he just kept us in it for a while there when we needed him to.

"We made some plays out in transition and when we went to the press, I think that's what really kind of got us going."

S-VE possessed the quickness to make it an exciting running game, but the Wolverines' press was a hindrance.

"I think the quickness, we're OK," Kastenhuber said. "We get in trouble when we think about it too much. We over-process or try to do a little too much instead of just keeping things simple and then we hurt ourselves. That happened a little bit tonight.

"The press disrupted us. It didn't turn us over a ton. We didn't have 25 turnovers or anything like that, but it disrupted our offensive flow a little bit. It's to their credit. They do it for a reason and they actually do it well."

Byrne paced S-VE with 12 points and blocked one shot while James Sutherlin contributed seven points and 10 rebounds. Brock had nine points, Blaine Whitmarsh scored seven, including a pair of treys, Merrick added three and John Bruno had two.

For Waverly, Aidan Westbrook had seven points, five rebounds and five steals, Griffen Stein had six points and five boards, Joey Tomasso pitched in with five points, six steals and four rebounds, and Bowen added six points.

S-VE (4-7) hosts Groton Friday.
