IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY RUNS AWAY FROM MARATHON (2020-01-14)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley closed out the first quarter with a six-point burst, then held Marathon to six points in the second quarter en route to a 63-33 IAC crossover victory here Tuesday.

The Olympians turned a 9-4 deficit into a 10-9 edge midway through the opening period, but a McKenna Nechwedowich free throw, a Hannah Ferguson basket from underneath and an Allie Wandell 3-pointer pushed NV in front, 15-10 heading into the second quarter.

The Cardinals would hold Marathon all-state standout Brooke Tillotson to two points in the second quarter as they built 35-16 cushion.

Meanwhile, NV's Makana Gardner came off the bench to score six points, Wandell scored four more and Bri Beebe knocked down a trey to highlight the Cardinals offense.

Taylor Benjamin nailed a three in the third quarter and Nechwedowich added four more points as NV took a 45-27 advantage into the final frame.

In the fourth, Nechwedowich put up six points, Beebe had five, including a trey, Sarah Mertson had four points and Ferguson had a trey as NV pulled away to improve to 12-0 on the season.

Nechwedowich finished the game with a double-double, 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also blocked five shots and handed out four assists. Beebe and Wandell contributed 11 points each and Wandell also snagged eight boards.

Ferguson chipped in with seven points and five boards; Gardner had six points, nine rebounds and three blocks; Taylor Benjamin had seven points; Kendra Morris had two points and four steals; Sarah Mertson added four points; and Allison Walker tacked on two points.

Tillotson scored 13 points for Marathon and Madison Clark added eight.

Newark Valley, ranked 14th in the state in Class B, visits Whitney Point Thursday in a game which has been moved up one day.
