CANDOR — Candor stepped up its game coming out of halftime, exploding with a 20-3 run to defeat Moravia, 41-37, In IAC Small School crossover action here Friday night.
The Indians trailed at the break, 21-17, but took advantage of seven points from Braelyn Hornick, six by Jennah Kareem and five from Shelby Swartz to create a 37-24 cushion heading into the final frame.
"At halftime we talked about several adjustments that we had to make, of course, but I also emphasized that we had to come out of the locker room and have a good third quarter," said Candor coach Carl Kanoff. "The past two games, the halftime score was very similar to this one and in those the third quarter lost us the games. We finally played more than two consecutive good quarters, and then held on for dear life.
"We had a short bench tonight. Two of our usual nine girls (one starter) were home with sickness and a couple on the floor were not feeling well either. By the fourth quarter we were spent. It was a good, hard fought win."
Moravia's comeback bid included a barrage of 3-point attempts, with two treys coming from Brianna Steger, and another from Kiersten Short. Candor was only able to muster four points from Kareem, but it was enough to make the final difference.
Both teams played a relatively even first half, with Moravia taking both of the first two frames, 9-8, and then 12-9. In the first quarter, Hornick put in six of her game-high 13 points. Kareem added a hoop to round out Candor's scoring. Brooke Wilcox and Pearl Ricardo would both hit threes in the second quarter to carry Candor into the locker room down four, 21-17.
Candor held Moravia to three Kate Baylor points in the third period as it surged ahead after the break.
Hornick and Kareem led the Indian scoring effort, each registering a double-double. Hornick added 13 rebounds to her 13 points while Kareem finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Swartz pulled down nine boards to go with her five points. Kilie Streeter made one free throw, and had six rebounds and two steals. Wilcox contributed seven points, and Ricardo had three.
Steger led Moravia with 10 points.
The Indians travel to Watkins Glen Tuesday.
