ENDWELL — M-E brought an unblemished record and a No. 6 Class A state ranking onto the hardwood against an Owego team which has had its struggles much of the season.
You wouldn't have guessed it by looking at the final score, because the Indians hung tight all the way to a 62-57 setback at the hands of the No. 6 Spartans.
M-E (8-0) posted a pair of 15-12 quarters to build a six-point advantage at the half, but Owego came out of the break to cut the lead to 44-41 heading into the fourth period.
Free throws played a role in the outcome as M-E went-15-for-20 at the line while Owego went 4-for-8.
The Indians received some nice long-range shooting at times as Evee Coleman and Larissa Fisher knocked down two 3-pointers apiece, and Kaci Donovan, Maddie Bennett and Ellie Sherwood chipped in with one trey each.
Coleman paced Owego with a game-high 22 points. Donovan scored 11, Fisher had six, Bennett and Donovan added five apiece, Shannon Heffernan chipped in with four and Katie Shoen added two.
The Spartans had four players finish in double figures. Kaetlyn L’Amoreaux led the way with 17 points and Allison L’Amoreaux recorded 13 more. Vasalia Anastos and Sophia Pelton pitched in with 11 apiece.
Owego (3-6) hosts Union Springs Wednesday.
