STAC WRESTLING: OWEGO THRASHES M-E TO FINISH 4-0 IN DIVISION (15 PHOTOS) (2019-01-08)
Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Quick pins by Kaden Russell and Logan Bailey highlighted Owego's 62-15 STAC Metro thrashing of M-E here Wednesday night.
The team had already clinched a second straight divisional championship prior to the match, but the victory gave the Indians an unblemished divisional record (4-0) for the second straight year.
"This group of kids is special," Owego coach Nick Rodgers said. "They're working hard. The division's down a little bit, but these guys are coming in, working hard every day. They definitely show up for dual meets and they're doing the right things to move this program in the right direction."
Russell clinched the win with a 35-second fall over Matt Krapf at 160 pounds while Bailey (285) closed out the night by decking Donavian Matevich in 55 seconds.
The match started with the lighter weights, 106 being the first class with a competitor. The Spartans, being thin down below would forfeit to Matt Laubach (106), Lucas Reilly (113) and Jozsiah Varga-Flynn (120), spotting the Indians an 18-0 advantage.
Jacob Millard (126) pushed it to 24-0 as he dispatched Nathan Jones in 5:34. Millard trailed, 12-2, before picking up a reversal and the fall.
M-E got nine points back when Payton Bennett (132) decisioned Jacob Morris, 6-0, and Ryan David-Kadaronak (138) received a forfeit.
With his team up, 24-9, Zach Miner (145) decisioned TJ Serkiz, 6-0.
Another forfeit to the Spartans closed the gap to 27-15, but Russell retaliated with a pin to ignite a six-bout run.
Cam Bundy (170) stuck Lucas Skojec in 3:59 and Mason Pratt (182) followed with a 19-2 technical fall over James Mancini in 5:09.
Following forfeits to Tyler Garcia (195) and Mike Bridge (220), Bailey got his fall.
"Just a hard fight," Rodgers said. "We went out there, we collected a lot of forfeits, but the kids that had matches, they were out there fighting. We had a great come-from-behind victory at 126 and the rest of the kids just went out there and did their job, wrestled hard the whole time."
Owego (11-3, 4-0 STAC) will visit Deposit / Hancock (1-5, 0-1 MAC) Tuesday.
