OWEGO — Owego endured a back-and-forth battle to defeat Vestal, 40-37, in STAC action here Tuesday, halting a three-game slide in the process.
The Indians bolted out to a 9-0 lead on an Evee Coleman 3-pointer and field goal, and baskets from Ellie Sherwood and Larissa Fisher.
Vestal wouldn't score for the first 5 1/2 minutes, then rallied to grab a 10-9 edge less than 2 1/2 minutes into the second quarter.
Maddie Bennett sparked a 7-0 run with a trey at 4:38. Coleman followed with a pair of free throws at 4:10 and Lauren Gilbert made it 16-10 with a bucket at 2:08.
In the final minute of the half, Kaci Donovan knocked down two foul shots and Coleman added a basket to make it 20-12 at the break.
Those points would be key as the Golden Bears refused to go away in the second half.
Owego's bench played a key role also, outscoring the Vestal reserves, 12-4.
The Indians' effort was led by Coleman, who finished with a game-high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Bennett chipped in with six points, two assists and two rebounds; and Donovan added six points and six boards.
Gilbert recored five points and five boards; Fisher had four points, three rebounds; Shannon Heffernan had two points; Sherwood contributed two points and two assists, and Shoen added one point
Vestal was paced by Olivia Muse and Lizzie England, both with nine points. Emma Lewis had eight points, Maddie Donlin scored six, Hailey O'Donnell added four and Carlin Reyen tacked on one point.
Owego (3-5) visits M-E Friday.
