TIOGA COUNTY FOOTBALL: TIOGA'S EMMETT WOOD SPEARHEADS ALL-STAR TEAM (2019-12-15)

Tioga County Sports Report TIOGA COUNTY — The Tioga football program has been known for producing exceptional running backs since its inception back in the early 1960s. Nothing changed this season as sophomore sensation Emmett Wood terrorized opposing defenses for 2,356 yards on the ground with 37 touchdowns.

The 2019 Tioga County Football "Player of the Year" averaged 10.5 yards per carry, ranking 25th in the state in single-season rushing yardage while his 42 total touchdowns are 15th. Both stats are No. 2 all-time in the school record book behind Jesse Manuel, Section IV's all-time rushing and scoring leader.

Wood was also a standout at linebacker, averaging 5.5 tackles per game with 12 tackles for losses. He came away with four turnovers and created two more, and was key in keeping opponents from running outside.

The Tigers' Brady Worthing is the "Offensive Player of the Year." The senior quarterback guided Tioga back to the state semifinals with his leadership on the field. Statistically, he rushed for 885 yards and 10 TDs while averaging 10.2 yards per carry. He also completed 51.4 percent (36-for-70) of his pass attempts for 520 yards and nine TDs, and was intercepted just three times.

Owego's Gio Fabi repeats as the "Defensive Player of the Year." He averaged 5.3 tackles per game with five tackles for losses and five sacks. The senior nose guard was frequently double-teamed by opposing blockers and often faced triple-team assignments. Even though he was 6-foot-2, 260 pounds, he was extremely quick and explosive off the ball.

Waverly's Joey Tomasso is the "Newcomer of the Year." The 8th-grader was mature beyond his years and threw for 1,307 yards and 10 TDs. He completed 49.5 percent (110-for-222) of his pass attempts with eight interceptions. He led the Wolverines to a 4-5 record as they jumped up to the highly competitive Class B ranks.

The "Lineman of the Year" is Tioga's Dom Wood. The senior was a menace on the defensive side of the ball, registering 101 tackles in 11 games. On the other side of the line, he was key to an offense which averaged 338.6 yards per game on the ground with 55 TDs. Tioga racked up 4,583 yards total offense and 64 total TDs.

It's hard to look past Tioga's Nick Aiello when selecting the "Coach of the Year." In his 10th season, and for the eighth time, he led the Tigers to the Section IV Class D and Central Region championships, and state semifinals — not to mention recording his 90th career victory in the process.
