TIOGA COUNTY VOLLEYBALL: CANDOR'S DYNAMIC DUO HEADLINES SUPERSTAR CAST (2019-12-14)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — The key to Candor's state championship run this season was teamwork — and the connection between outside hitter Jennah Kareem and setter Braelyn Hornick was truly special.

The duo's bond on and off the court was key to the Indians' success. Not to take anything away from the other team members, but a state title probably would have eluded Candor had either of these two players not been present. Therefore, the pair will share the 2019 Tioga County Volleyball “Player of the Year” honor.

Kareem, a senior with a blistering shot at the net, blasted opponents with 203 kills in 69 sets this fall. She contributed 113 digs, and served nearly 100 points, including 33 aces.

Her kill numbers wouldn't have been nearly as impressive had she not been set up at the net by Hornick. The junior handed out 551 assists to Kareem and the other Indian hitters. She also contributed close to 100 service points, to include 61 aces. She also had 64 digs.

Tioga's Emme Hall is the "Newcomer of the Year." The sophomore middle hitter led the Tigers in blocks with 65. She also surpassed 100 kills and 100 service points, and accumulated more than 75 digs as Tioga went 14-5.

Candor's Pam Quinlan is the Coach of the Year." On the way to the Class D state championship, she led her group to a 22-0 overall record and 66 wins in 69 sets. The Indians' only loss in regular season dual match sets came in the third game of the third match of the season in a 3-1 win against Edison.

The team went on to post a 17-0 regular season record and win the IAC South Small School division and league titles, and would not drop another dual set until the Section IV championship, where the Indians battled past two-time defending state champ Bainbridge-Guilford, 3-2. They swept Lafayette at regionals, then swept pool play and Panama in the finals at the state championships.
