TIOGA COUNTY GIRLS SOCCER: WAVERLY STANDOUT ORTIZ HEADLINES ALL-STAR SQUAD (2019-12-12)

TIOGA COUNTY — Waverly senior Melina Ortiz was recently selected to the Class B all-state first team for the second year in a row, so it should come as no surprise that she has been named the 2019 Tioga County Girls Soccer “Player of the Year.”

A five-year varsity starter and three-time all-state pick (twice on first team) who will continue her career at Division I Siena College, she 12 goals and dished out seven assists this season, ending her scholastic career with 60 goals and 45 assists. She would also lead the Wolverines to their third consecutive IAC South Large School championship.

Newark Valley's Makenna Nechwedowich has been selected the "Defensive Player of the Year." A two-time fifth-team all-state pick (Class B this season, Class C in 2018), she was a leader on the field and held opponents' top scorers in check. The junior scored seven goals and handed out seven assists for the Cardinals and initiated the majority of the team's corner kicks.

Waverly's Kennedy Westbrook is the Newcomer of the Year. The freshman scored 14 goals and contributed 10 assists to the Wolverines' effort.

The Coach of the Year is Waverly's Tara Hogan. She led her charges to a 14-3 overall record and their third consecutive division title. The Wolverines would finish as the IAC Large School runner-up and advanced to the Section IV Class B semifinals before their season ended.
