TIOGA COUNTY BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: NEWARK VALLEY'S SHERWOOD EDGES OUT RIVALS TO EARN TOP RUNNER HONOR (2019-12-10)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — It was arguably the top rival of the recent fall sports season — featuring Newark Valley's Jonny Sherwood SVEC's Callum Avery and Waverly's Collin Wright. In the end it would be Sherwood emerging as the 2019 Tioga County Boys Cross Country “Runner of the Year.”

At meets where all three competitors ran the same course (they may have been running in different races), each athlete posted the top time twice. Sherwood prevailed in two of the three big meets, winning the IAC title and topping his rivals at the Section IV Class C championships with a runner-up finish. He would go on to place 29th at the state meet.

With the graduation hits Owego suffered, the door was open for several new faces to make their mark on the program. It was Indian sophomore Hunter Ellis who emerged as the team's and the county's top rookie, making him the "Newcomer of the Year." He was the top first-year runner from Tioga County in every meet but one.

Owego, despite losing all but one of its competitors from the 2018 state team, would improve steadily throughout the season. The Indians would surge past STAC rivals Windsor and Johnson City to win their third consecutive Section IV Class B championship, thus qualifying the entire team for a trip back to the state meet.

That effort earned John Heath the "Coach of the Year" honor.
