SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: NEWARK VALLEY FALLS TO GREENE IN CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP (24 PHOTOS) (2019-11-02)

Tioga County Sports Report
VESTAL — Greene came into the Section IV Class C Field Hockey Championship with an 8-8 record and the eight-seed. What that doesn't tell you is the Trojans played a grueling schedule which included multiple games against five of the top teams in the state.

Anyone who doubted Greene, even after a 1-0 upset of 5-time defending state champion Whitney Point in the quarterfinals, should have become a believer after the Trojans defeated Marathon, 5-0, in the semifinals, then bested Newark Valley, 6-1, in the championship game here Saturday.

Greene, which returned seven division all-stars this season, scored three first-half goals, then tacked on a three more in the second half, however, it took the Trojans a while to take control of the game.

"The team played hard, but couldn't quite keep up with Greene," said NV head coach Jessica Doehring.

Alex Brown scored early with Olivia Kennedy assisting at 28:40 for a 1-0 Greene lead.

The Cardinals would even things up at 22:31 on Taylor Benjamin's unassisted goal.

From there, the score would remain deadlocked until Kennedy scored with an assist by Tess Unkel at 10:47.The duo would team up again with 2:33 left in the half to give Greene a 3-1 advantage.

That same duo would prove to be a thorn in NV's side in the second half as well. Unkel scored at 20:47 with an assist by Kennedy. Unkel recorded her fourth point of the game with an unassisted tally at 11:44. Kennedy closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal for a hat trick at 9:05.

Greene took 20 shots to NV's two and held a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Gavin Blee had 13 saves for the Cardinals, who finished the season with a 14-5 record.
