IAC CROSS COUNTRY: NV'S SHERWOOD WINS INDIVIDUAL TITLE AT LEAGUE MEET (2019-11-02)

MARATHON — It may be the biggest victory of Jonny Sherwood's career to date. The Newark valley sophomore won the varsity boys individual title at the IAC Cross Country Championships here Friday — and beat Watkins Glen standout Gabe Planty in the process.

VARSITY BOYS
Sherwood posted a time of 17:22.2, crossing the finish line exactly four seconds ahead of Planty. Waverly standout Collin Wright placed third with a time of 17:45.2.

Other Tioga County runners placing among the top 20 were Waverly's Nate Ackley in eighth (18:12.6), NV's Seth Hartenstein in 11th (18:26.9), SVEC's Callum Avery in 13th (18:30.2), NV's Connor Yetter in 15th (18:45), Jayden Rose of Waverly in 20th (19:03.8) and Mark Vosburgh from Newark Valley in 22nd (19:14.6).

Other Tioga County competitors included Waverly's Liam Traub (26th, 19:26), the Wolverines' Brandon Bubniak (27th, 19:32.5), Tioga's Thomas Hurd (29th, 19:35.2), NV's Noah Waterman (32nd, 19:42.7), SVEC's Ryan Hodges (40th, 19:58.7), Patrick Bishop of Newark Valley (45th, 20:18.4), Nathan Gillette from SVEC (47th, 20:19.3), Jake Ludwig of Newark Valley (50th, 20:32.5), SVEC's Tyler Doster (51st, 20:36.8), Tioga's Ty Middendorf (52nd, 20:40.7), Waverly's Kaden Wheeler (53rd, 20:48.2), Wyatt Stouffer from SVEC (67th, 21:37.6), SVEC's Isaac Lindridge (68th, 21:37.7), SVEC's Ty'Vone Benners (69th, 21:44.3), Gavin Schillmoelle from Waverly (71st, 21:51.8), Mason Card of Tioga (77th, 22:24.5), Tioga's Josh Reis (84th, 23:32.3) and Colt Herrala of Tioga (91st, 25:53.5).

Watkins Glen won the team championship with 57 points. Newark Valley was the runner-up with 81, nipping Waverly by three points. ShVEC was ninth (217) and Tioga took 13th (323).

VARSITY GIRLS
Dryden's Emily Miller won the individual title with a time of 20:22.4, besting Waverly's Sheridan Talada , who posted a time of 20:35.7.

Newark Valley's Renee Riegel finished fifth, clocking 21:08.9. Elizabeth Fritzen of Waverly was the only other Tioga County runner among the top 10, taking eighth with a time of 21:29.7.

Waverly would place two other runners in the top 20, Paige Ackley in 18th with a time of 22:57.6 and Olivia Nittinger in 20th at 23:23.1.

Jenna O'Connell led the SVEC effort, taking 31st in 24:31.2.

Other Tioga County runners were SVEC's Mya Marsh (36th, 25:08.5) and Olivia Secondo (38th, 25:25.4); the Newark Valley trio of Sarah Raymond (39th, 25:40.2), Breanna Brigham (40th, 26:09.8) and Monica Escalante (42nd, 26:41.1), Tioga's Mariah Nichols (43rd, 27:01.1), Aubrey Akins from Waverly (49th, 27:50.1) and SVEC's Olivia Bennett (50th, 27:53.1).

Elmira Notre Dame took the team title with 41 points, Lansing was second with 58 and Waverly placed third with 83. NV finished seventh with 151. SVEC and Tioga had incomplete teams.

Next up for the harriers is the state qualifier Thursday at Chenango Valley State Park.
