SECTION IV VOLLEYBALL: CANDOR, OWEGO DRAW TOP SEEDS FOR STATE QUALIFIERS (2019-11-01)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY — Defending champion Owego has drawn the top seed for the Section IV Class B Volleyball Championship tournament, while unbeaten Candor is the No. 1 seed in the Class D tourney.

CLASS B
Drawing the top seed is not a big surprise for the Indians (14-1), considering the fact they have advanced to the state championship match in each of the previous six seasons, winning titles in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Owego will open the tournament Thursday with a pool play semifinal against Oneonta (7-6) at 4:15 p.m. Also competing are Norwich (8-4) and M-E (5-8). The semis will be a two-set pool play format.

The championship match will be held Nov. 9 at noon at Corning.

CLASS D
A perfect 18-0 record has earned the top seed for Candor in the Section IV Class D Volleyball Championship tournament, which begins Monday at the home of the higher seeds.

The Indians are 18-0 and will received a first-round bye. They will host the winner of eighth-seeded Walton (9-5) and ninth-seeded Delhi (8-6) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals. The Walton-Delhi match is the only preliminary round match.

In other quarterfinals, all of which will be played Tuesday, two-time defending state champ and No. 2 seed Bainbridge-Guilford (14-1) hosts No. 7 Oxford (8-4), third-seeded Tioga (13-5) hosts No. 6 Deposit / Hancock (12-5) and No. 4 Union Springs (12-4) hosts No. 5 Moravia (10-5). All quarters will start at 6 p.m.

The semifinals, which will be a two-set pool play format, will be held Thursday beginning at 4:15 p.m. at the home of the highest remaining seed.

The championship match will be held Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. at Corning.

CLASS C
Waverly (10-6) is the sixth seed and visits No. 3 Lansing (13-4) for a quarterfinal Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Windsor (14-0) has dropped down from Class B and is the top seed. Trumansburg (14-3) is the second seed.

Newark Valley will not be competing. The Cardinals (15-4) exceeded the 20-match limit Section IV and state coordinator Patti Perone confirmed.

The match limit includes head-to-head matches and tournaments. A one-day tournament counts as one match and NV played in 19 head-to-head matches and two tournaments.

NV is not the only team affected by the rule. Two other teams, Saunders and Putnam Valley, were disqualified from Section I tournaments due to an excessive number of matches.

Perone said NV athletic director Scott Wandell attended an appeal hearing today. No word on the ruling was released, but NV was not included in the brackets released this afternoon.

Admission will be charged for the pool play semifinals and championship rounds.
