SECTION IV FIELD HOCKEY: DEFENSIVE-MINDED SVEC 'CORNERS' MORAVIA (17 PHOTOS) (2019-10-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
SPENCER — SVEC's up-and-down season was on the up here Tuesday as the Eagles blanked defending Section IV Division 3 champion Moravia, 1-0.

A strong defensive effort paid off as Ryleigh Clark scored the game's only goal on a penalty corner with 9:58 remaining to play. Taya Sousa picked up the assist on the play.

It was a fitting reward for a team which stepped up to defend well against the corner at the other end of the field.

"We had to play a lot of defense," SVEC head coach Abby Gentile said. "Especially in the second half, but the girls were up for it. After fighting off nine corners from Moravia, we were able to connect on a corner.

"Corner defense has been a problem for us at times this year, but tonight the girls protected the goal well."

The Blue Devils outshot the Eagles, 5-2, and finished the game with an 11-5 advantage in corners.

SVEC's Bella Young made five saves in goal and Moravia's Brook Purdy had one.

SVEC (7-7) and Moravia (10-7-2) now await the Section IV Class C tournament seedings.
