STAC GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING: OWEGO SECOND IN CLASS B AT ELMIRA INVITE; SHOEN MEETS STATE QUALIFYING STANDARD IN 50 FREE (2019-10-13)

ELMIRA — Owego's Katie Shoen met the state qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle at the Elmira Invitational Saturday. The senior led the Indians to a runner-up showing in the Class B division, and    posted overall victories in the 50 and 100 free.

Shoen won the 50 free with a time of 24.52 seconds, eclipsing the state qualifying standard by 32-hundredths of a second. Teammate Jennifer Scott was third in 26.14 seconds. 

In the 100 free, Shoen and teammate Ashleigh Gault claimed the top two spots with Shoen winning in 54.48 seconds and Gault posting a time of 56.58 seconds. Emma French placed seventh in 1:01.01 and Carly Kirtland was 12th in 1:09.33.

Gault added a victory in the 100 backstroke, clocking 1:02.98. French took third in 1:07.56. Allison Shoen was 13th in 1:20.19. 

Stephenson won the 200 freestyle in 2:04.72. Holly Kersten was seventh in 2:19.16.

Jennifer Scott was second in the 100 butterfly, clocking 1:03.31. Ashleigh Allen was eighth with a 1:23.47.

Stephenson placed third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.02.

Kersten finished eighth in the 500 free with a time of 6:25.62.

Owego won the 200 medley and 200 free relays as well. Ashleigh Gault, Emma Stephenson, Jennifer Scott and Katie Shoen recorded a time of 1:53.11. Scott, Stephenson, Gault and Shoen registered a time of 1:41.85 in the 200 free.

Alison Shoen, Kirtland, Kersten and French were third in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:28.37.

In diving, 7th-grader Kaelyn Katchuk took 16th with 357.3 points.

Chenango Valley won the Class B competition with 180 points, edging Owego by two. Ithaca took the Class A title with 248 points and Watkins Glen won Class C with 147.

Gault, Katie Shoen, and Stephenson won two individual races apiece during Thursday's STAC meet. Gault took the 100 free (56.51) and 100 back (1:06.03), Shoen the 50 free (26.43) and 100 fly (1:04.2), and Stephenson the 500 free (6:01.13) and 100 breast (1:16.52).

French had a win in the 200 free (2:15.99) and Scott took the 200 IM (2:30.38).

Gault, Scott, Katie Shoen and Stephenson teamed up to take the 200 medley relay (1:57.46) and 200 free relay (1:50.61). Allison Shoen, Kirtland, Kersten and French won the 400 free relay (4:26.09).

The Indians' runners-up were Kaelyn Katchuk in diving, Scott in the 100 free and French in the 100 back.

Placing third were Kersten in the 200 free and 500 free, Kirtland in the 50 free and 200 breast, Lily Harbol in diving, Emma Pawlak in the 100 fly, Pawlak, Kersten, Jenna Bergmann and French in the 200 free relay, and Allison Welch, Ashleigh Allen, Madison Allen and Morgan Cote in the 400 free relay.

Katie Shoen won the 50 free (25.43) and 100 back (1:03.05), and Stephenson captured the 100 breast (1:14.5).

Owego's second-place finishers were Gault in the 100 free and 100 back, Stephenson in the 100 free, the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay of Gault, Stephenson, Scott and Katie Shoen.

Placing third were Kersten in the 200 free and 500 free, Scott in the 50 free and 100 fly, Katchuk in diving, French in the 100 free, and the 400 free relay of Allison Shoen, Madison Holmes, Pawlak and Ashleigh Allen.

Owego (3-3) completes its dual meet season at home Tuesday against Norwich.
