Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — SVEC's John Garrison ran away from the field to win the individual title at the IAC South Division Boys Modified Cross Country Championship Tuesday while the host school won the team competition. Newark Valley would make it a sweep with a victory in the girls race as well.
BOYS
Garrison posted a time of 8:56.6 and was the only runner to finish the course in less than nine minutes. Waverly's Liam Wright was second in 9:43.2 and Edison's Cody Lucero was third with a 9:53.7.
Leading NV was Tyler Bennet, fourth with a time of 10:01.2. James Wales finished sixth (10:05.23), Danny Pirger was ninth (10:24.9), John Turnbull took 12th (10:34) and Michael Medina rounded out the team scoring in 17th place (10:48.8).
The Cardinals would score 41 points to top Waverly (49 points), Edison (61) and SVEC (71) for the team championship. Tioga and Watkins Glen had incomplete teams.
Helping Garrison score for the Eagles were Brian Belanger Jr. in fifth (10:02.6), Caden Ruben in 24th (11:37), Adon Bostwick in 31st (14:41.5) and Oscar Secondo (17:32.1).
NV's non-scoring competitors included James Hackett (20th, 11:04.8), Bryce Dunn (26th, 12:44.2), Darrin Plagens (29th, 14:26) and Josh Karp (30th, 14:32.8).
GIRLS
The Cardinals' 3-4-5 finish set the stage for victory. Emma Dingman led the trio with a third-place effort, clocking 10:56.4. Addysen Osburn was fourth in 11:01.6 and Harley Switzer took fifth with an 11:21.2.
Brianna Hillman added a top-10 finish, placing 10th in 12:10.6, and Cassidy Downey rounded out the team scoring in 15th (12:30.3).
NV scored 22 points to Edison's 46 and Tioga's 63. SVEC, Watkins Glen and Waverly had incomplete teams.
SVEC was paced by Adriana Farmer in seventh (11:40.6). Emma Hayne took ninth (11:53.1) and Julia Dunham was 14th (12:22.9).
Other runners for Newark Valley included Mikayla Lawrence (16th, 12:34.8), Elizabeth Waterson (23rd, 13:52), Emma Smith (24th, 13:54.5) and Bianca Milewski (25th, 13:59.5).
