IAC GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: NV'S RIEGEL, SVEC'S O'CONNELL PACE THEIR TEAMS AT SOUTH DIVISION RUN (15 PHOTOS) (2019-10-08)
Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Renee Riegel was the highest-placing non-senior at the IAC South Division Girls Cross Country Championship Tuesday.
The Newark Valley junior clocked 21:53.2 to finish fourth as the Cardinals took fourth in the seven-team field.
SVEC's Jenna O'Connell placed 11th with a time of 24:11.2 to pace her team and a trio of Eagles grabbed three of the next four spots to help the team secure a runner-up showing.
Erin Bruttomesso was 12th in 24:28.7, Mya Marsh took 14th with a 24:48.2 and Olivia Secondo finished 15th in 25:31.4. That grouping enabled SVEC to edge out Edison and NV by two and three points, respectively.
The Cardinals' Brianna Brigham broke up the SVEC group, placing 13th with a time of 24:47.4.
Edison had a pair of top-10 finishers, but didn't have any other runners cross the finish line in the top 15.
NV's Sarah Raymond was 16th (25:31.4), Monica Escalante took 18th (27:13.3) and Charlotte Dunn was 23rd (28:28).
Olivia Bennett rounded out SVEC's scoring in 22nd (28:01.7).
NV had one non-scoring competitor, Rosie Hines, who placed 27th with a time of 29:37.
Waverly's Sheridan Talada unseated Notre Dame's Alyssa Walker as the individual champion, posting a time of 20:12.8 to lead the Wolverines to the team title with 46 points. SVEC scored 53, Edison had 55 and NV had 56. Notre Dame, Tioga and Watkins Glen had incomplete teams
Newark Valley will host the Bob Greene Invitational Friday. SVEC returns to action Oct. 19 at the Marathon Invitational.
