IAC BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: SVEC'S AVERY, NV'S SHERWOOD LEAD THEIR TEAMS AT DIVISIONAL MEET (24 PHOTOS) (2019-10-08)
Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — If you were looking for a major upset at the IAC South Division Boys Cross Country Championship Tuesday you were probably disappointed.
Watkins Glen standout Gabe Planty successfully defended his individual title, using his patented late-race kick to pull away and win with a time of 17:01.7.
Up for grabs, however, was the No. 2 spot in the division — where Waverly's Collin Wright, SVEC's Callum Avery and Newark Valley's Jonny Sherwood would battle for position.
The Wright-Avery-Sherwood duel was expected to be an interesting one, especially considering all three are returning state qualifiers. Wright topped Avery and Sherwood at the Owego Invitational as they finished 3-5-6. However, Avery beat Sherwood in the SVEC Dual Meet, and topped Wright at the Waverly Dual Meet while Sherwood topped Wright at the Dryden Dual Meet.
The trio, as well as Planty and dark horse Steven Gough of Notre Dame, competed in the McQuaid Invitational but the group was spread out across three different races. However, the course was the same for each and Planty broke 16 minutes. Avery was in the low-16s, Wright in the mid-16s, Sherwood in the low-17s and Gough in the mid-17s.
At the divisional race, Wright posted a time of 17:26.3 to best Avery (17:40.5) and Sherwood (17:51.3), who placed third and fourth, respectively. Gough (17:55.6) ended up fifth. No other runners broke 18 minutes.
Waverly would end up winning the team title with 46 points, topping Watkins Glen's 58 and NV's 62. SVEC was fourth with 112, followed by ND (114), Edison (154) and Tioga (176).
Rounding out NV's scoring were Seth Hartenstein (9th, 18:26), Connor Yetter (13th, 19:01), Mark Vosburgh (16th, 19:15) and Noah Waterman (20th, 19:36).
SVEC's scoring runners were Ryan Hodges (19th, 19:31), Nathan Gillette (27th, 20:24), Isaac Lindridge (31st, 21:05) and Wyatt Stouffer (32nd, 21:10).
Non-scoring runners were the Cardinals' Patrick Bishop (23rd, 20:06) and Jake Ludwig (28th, 20:35), and the Eagles' Ty Benners (35th, 21:22) and Ben Dizer (28th, 21:42).
Also competing for NV were Tim Bishop (39th, 21:43.3), Montana Wallace (42nd, 21:49), John Fiacco (43rd, 21:51.6), Aiden Hollenbeck (44th, 21:51.9), Anvil Illsley (51st, 22:36.7), Brody Hines (69th, 29:05.6), Trace Davis (71st, 30:22.5) and Jason Knight (77th, 36:14).
