SECTION IV BOYS GOLF: OWEGO'S EVANS PLACES 3RD AT CLASS B CHAMPIONSHIP (2019-10-08)
Tioga County Sports ReportAPALACHIN — Owego's Brendan Evans birdied the final hole to force a tie, then won the tie-breaker to place third at the Section IV Class B Boys Golf Championship at The Links at Hiawatha Landing Tuesday.
The senior, who had struggled with his putting at times during the round, had no problem draining a short birdie putt on No. 18 to create a tie with Seton Catholic's Liam Burtis. Evans carded a four on the 470-yard, par-5 final hole with a slight dogleg left along a pond, and won the tie-breaker.
Evans shot 42 on Hiawatha's front nine and finished with 41 on the back. He has qualified for the Section IV Medalist Tournament next spring.
The Indians' Nick Purtell matched his teammate's 42 on the front nine, but scored 51 on the back to finish with a 93, missing the top 10 by one spot.
Owego's Adam Gault, playing in the No. 4 spot, contributed a 97, and Mason Rieg, competing out of the No. 6 spot added a 100. Kyle Koprevich rounded out the team scoring with a 102 and Karson Tofte added a non-scoring 108.
The Indians placed fourth in the five-team field with a 475. Seton Catholic repeated as team champs, shooting 411. Windsor was second at 455, Johnson City scored 469, and Susquehanna Valley had a 533.
Seton's Michael Bucko captured medalist honors with a 4-under 68. He was 3-under on the front nine. The Saints' Danny Crowley was the individual runner-up with a 79.
