THE WEEK AHEAD: BIG EVENTS, KEY CLASHES HIGHLIGHT SCHEDULE (38 EVENTS) (2019-10-07)
Tioga County Sports ReportTIOGA COUNTY — Believe it or not, the postseason is here — in one sport anyway. The Section IV Class B Boys Golf Championship is Tuesday, marking the first postseason event of the fall season.
Meanwhile, STAC and IAC cross country teams are holding divisional meets, the football playoff picture starts to take shape, and some soccer and volleyball teams clash in key league battles.
Following are some, but not all of this week’s events (for full schedules, check the school pages).
MONDAY (7)• Owego competes in the STAC Metro division cross country meet at U-E's Ann G. McGuinness Elementary School.
• Newark Valley girls soccer visits Waverly for an IAC South Large School showdown.
• Candor volleyball puts its unbeaten record on the line at old nemesis Tioga.
TUESDAY (6)• The Owego boys golf team competes in the Section IV Class B championship tournament at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin.
• Newark Valley and SVEC, as well as Tioga and Waverly, will compete in the IAC South divisional meet at NV.
• Owego's girls soccer and volleyball team are at home and are time-scheduled so that you can go watch both teams in action.
WEDNESDAY (6)• Newark Valley volleyball visits Waverly for an IAC South Large School showdown.
• The Owego soccer teams head west with the boys at Horseheads and the girls going to Corning.
THURSDAY (7)• The regular season is winding down for the Owego girls swimmers and divers as they host Oneonta in their next-to-last dual meet of the season.
• Newark Valley boys soccer hits the road to take another crack at SVEC.
• Field hockey takes an intra-county turn as SVEC hosts Tioga and Owego hosts Newark Valley.
FRIDAY (8)• SVEC football hosts WG / OM in Candor for Homecoming and a Section IV Division III must-win game. The winner keeps its division title and playoff hopes alive.
• Owego heads east to face Chenango Valley with the loser being tossed into a fight for the fourth and final Section IV Class B playoff spot.
• Newark Valley hosts the Bob Greene Invitational, which includes the Cardinals and cross country teams from Owego, Tioga and Waverly.
• Owego girls swimming and diving competes in the Elmira Invitational.
SATURDAY (4)• The Newark Valley football team can lock up the Section IV Division III title with a victory over Dryden at home.
• Owego girls swimming and diving competes in the Elmira Invitational.
• Newark Valley volleyball competes in the Dryden Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament.
• Owego volleyball competes in the Windsor Invitational.
