IAC GIRLS SOCCER: NV DROPS GLM TOURNAMENT FINAL TO LANSING (2019-09-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
WATKINS GLEN — Newark Valley pummeled Lansing with multiple shots, but just couldn't seem to find a route into the goal in a 3-0 loss in the GLM Tournament championship game Saturday.

"The first half was back and forth and mainly a midfield battle. We had a chance early in the opening moments to score with Leah Williams taking a shot that hit the inside post but bounced out. It was a sign of things to come," said NV head coach Chuck Schneider.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard board with 12 minutes left in the first half and added another goal four minutes later. Five minutes into the second half Lansing scored on a corner.

"From that point on we took over the game with all of the play being in Lansing’s half and around their 18," Schneider said.  "We would hit the cross bar six times and the post two times. Lansing defended well (against) the number of crosses sent into the box.  We had a couple just go wide of the goal.

"The Lansing keeper, Iris Boerman, had an amazing performance.  She made a lot of outstanding saves. What doesn’t show up in the stat line is her ability to aggressively attack the ball. Many times, when we hit the posts, she would immediately hunt the ball down and dive on it. She did well coming out and stopping a shot before it could be taken.

The Cardinals took 20 shots to Lansing's five and corner kicks were even at three apiece.

Boerman made 10 saves and NV's Christa Shanbacher had one.

"Overall, I am proud our team never gave up," Schneider said. "They could have easily quit with going down 3-0, but they found the strength to really step up and try to fight for a comeback."

Newark Valley hosts SVEC Wednesday.
