IAC GIRLS SOCCER: NV WINS GLM TOURNAMENT OPENER (2019-09-12)
Tioga County Sports ReportWATKINS GLEN — Emma Miller and Leah Williams put up five points apiece to lead Newark Valley to an 8-1 victory over Watkins Glen in the first round of the GLM Tournament Thursday.
Miller scored three goals and dished out two assists while Williams contributed two goals and three assists.
Kelsey Kerns chipped in with a pair of goals and Megan Felicetti added a goal. Makenna Nechwedowich, Isabella Sheil and Maddie Peabody had one assist each.
"Leah opened the scoring 12 minutes in by taking a pass from Emma Miller. Watkins tied the game back up in under a minute with a penalty kick taken by Carly Arnold," NV head coach Chuck Schneider said. "Emma finished a volley on a corner taken by Makenna with 18 left. Two minutes later Kelsey took a ball from Leah and squeaked the ball between the keeper and post. Â
"In the second Leah would strike again 10 minutes into the half. Seven minutes later the girls scored three goals in a six-minute span. Megan closed out the scoring, taking a pass from Maddie."
The Cardinals dominated statistically as well. NV held a 35-3 advantage in shots and a 10-0 cushion in corner kicks.
Christa Schanbacher made two saves in goal.
"Overall, the team played well together and worked hard to bounce back from Monday," Schneider said of NV's 4-1 loss to rival Waverly.
The Cardinals will play Lansing, a 7-1 winner over Sayre, in Saturday's championship game.
The GLM Tournament was created in memory of Kyle Gregory, Brennan Love and Seth Marcellus, WGHS soccer players who died in an accident in 2003. Proceeds from the tourney the GLM Foundation projects.
