Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Callum Avery repeated as the boys winner at the SVEC Iron Kettle Farm XC Meet Tuesday, but Newark Valley took the team title with five top 10 showings.

Last year, his margin of victory was nine seconds. This time, Avery cruised to a 37-second win over Dryden's Robert Brotherton with a time of 18:19. NV standout Jonny Sherwood came in third in 19:09 to pace the Cardinal effort.

"He trained all summer, so we're excited about what he can do," said SVEC co-head coach John Everett. "He qualified for the state meet last year by finishing fourth in the section meet and we're hoping that this year he does the same and we go off to Plattsburgh in November."

Newark Valley would score 33 points to outdistance Dryden's 52 and SVEC's 69. Tioga placed fourth with 104 and Edison rounded out the field with 110.

"On the boys team, we've got some young guys," Everett said. "Nathan Gillette and Tyler Doster and Josh Dumond are all ninth- and 10th-graders. One from Candor is a senior that came out was a surprise, so we're excited to see what we can do."

NV's Connor Yetter finished fifth with a time of 19:31. Seth Hartenstein and Mark Vosburgh placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in 19:54 and 20:22. Patrick Bishop closed out the team's scoring in 10th, clocking 21:13.

"We're not racing yet," said NV head coach Eric D'Arcy. "We're still to the point where we're just working on a lot of different things. We're having hard practices, pushing the guys to practice.

"The goals really are what happens toward the end of October, the beginning of November, and I always say that all the time, but that's true. It's a nice day to get out and get a little bit of racing in, but it's not highly competitive in terms of what we're trying to achieve later ion in the year. Run well, run comfortable, but don't get hurt, don't do anything stupid."

The Eagles' Nathan Gillette was 13th in 21:52 and Tyler Doster took 15th with a 21:58. Ryan Hodges placed 18th with a time of 22:27 and Ben Dizer was 21st with a 22:49 to wrap up the SVEC scoring.

Wyatt Stouffer was right with his SVEC teammate at the finish line and took 22nd with the same time.

NV's Noah Waterman just missed scoring team points as well, finishing two seconds behind Bishop in 11th with a 21:15.

Other Cardinal competitors included Jacob Ludwig (17th, 22:15), Tim Bishop (33rd, 24:17), Montana Wallace (37th, 25:00), John Fiacco (38th, 25:01), Camden McCall (41st, 25:50), Ryan Hoyt (48th, 27:19), Brody Hynes (57th, 33:56), Andrew Post (60th, 36:22) and Jason Knight (62nd, 39:41.)

SVEC's other runners were Isaac Lindridge (27th, 23:36), Matthew Fitch (28th, 23:55), Josh Menter (30th, 24:04), Liam Hiaman (50th, 29:19) and Luke Simonton (53rd, 29:39).

The third Tioga County team, Tioga was led by Ty Middendorf, 16th in 22 minutes flats. Mason Card placed 20th with a time of 22:36, Kyle Earley was 25th in 23:21, Thomas Hurd took 31st in 24:05 and Nate Jaye claimed 35th, clocking 24:36.

Also competing for Tioga were Josh Reis (49th, 28:09), Zach Nichols (51st, 29:34), Colt Herrala (52nd, 29:38); Max Dydynski (54th, 29:56), Dawson Philhower (58th, 34:04), Zander Whitmore (59th, 34:10), Jack Cary (61st, 36:39) and Reed Cook (63rd, 41:46).

"First race, a lot of new runners. A lot of them are just getting the feel of how a race runs," Tioga head coach Jim Burrowes. "There were five schools, counting us, so I think they got a good feel of what a race is like. For the most part it wax fairly flat and not too intimidating."
