NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley scored early, but Waverly bounced back to take the lead late in the first half en route to a 4-1 IAC South Large School victory Monday.
Leah Williams found the back of the net at 37:12 with the assist going to Maris Aylesworth, but the Cardinals were unable to add to their tally.
Waverly came back to score two first-half goals, tying the game on eighth-grader Lea VanAllen's first varsity goal on a feed from her older sister, Sadie. The game-winning score coming from Melina Ortiz via a pass from Sadie VanAllen with just over 13 minutes remaining in the period.
The Wolverines tacked on two insurance goals in the second half.
Gabby Picco scored on an Ortiz free kick following a hand ball, then Sadie VanAllen scored off her sister's pass with less than six minutes remaining.
Waverly outshot NV, 14-9, and held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
It was the Cardinals' season opener while Waverly improved to 3-0.
NV competes in the Watkins Glen Tournament Thursday.
