Tioga County Sports Report for Penn York Valley

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Owego went 6-3 in 2018, falling to perennial powerhouses Chenango Forks and Maine-Endwell (twice). The Indians suffered several key graduation losses, as well as a standout who has moved away, but they do return several quality players and should have some solid newcomers in the mix.

Class B will look slightly different to head coach Steve Virkler with Section IV Class C runner-up Waverly moving to Class B and Windsor dropping to Class C.

Following are Virkler’s thoughts on a few topics about the upcoming season.

What do you think of the changes to Class B?
“Class B in Section IV has been one of the toughest divisions in NYS year in and year out. That will not change this year — with Waverly coming back up to Class B it will create some great match-ups. Their staff is very familiar with the teams in our Division and they will be well-prepared every week.”

Any thoughts on having another Tioga County school in your division?
“If you look at all the football teams in Tioga County right now it is extremely competitive. It would be a fantastic division to have all of us in one division, which will never happen because of enrollment differences. We've had a great rivalry with Waverly over the years and this year will be no different — as I said earlier they will be well-prepared and ready to compete each week.”

Do you like the way your schedule is set up this season?
“Our schedule this year will be very competitive starting week one vs. Chenango Forks. We will need to be ready for great competition every single week. We will do our best to make sure our guys are prepared and ready for the upcoming week.”

Are there any rule changes that affect your program?
“Nothing that I know of yet.”
