YOUTH BASEBALL: OWEGO (GREGORY) CAPS LONG DAY WITH 'C2' DIVSION TITLE AT OWEGO LITTLE LEAGUE 10U TOURNEY (13 PHOTOS) (2019-07-15)

OWEGO — Nearly 5 1/2 hours and 70-plus runs later, the C2 division crowned a champion at the Owego Little League 10U Tournament Sunday.

Owego (Gregory) had to play two games in the championship round, dropping the first to U-E (Ciotoli), 20-11, then winning the decisive clash, 25-15. Game one started about 10:45 a.m. The trophy presentation took place around 4:15 p.m.

The previous day, Owego put up big numbers as well to beat Ithaca (Hall), 17-7.

Owego 17, Ithaca 7
Owego rode three big innings to victory, scoring four runs in the first, five in the second, and seven in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Elijah Wheeler went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI; and Jeremiah Wheeler was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

Sam Buchsbaum was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI; Cayden Smith was 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBI; and Rocco Canfield went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.
Ryan Diedrich, Beckett Tirinato and Dylan Gregory had a hit and two runs apiece; Hayden Blenco had a hit and an RBI; Brenden Whigham had a hit, run and RBI; and Nolan Card and Benjamin Mikels added one run each.

Canfield went the distance on the mound, giving up six earned runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven.

U-E 25, Owego 11
U-E jumped out to a 14-0 advantage in the third inning, but Owego battled back to cut the lead to 15-10 heading into the sixth inning.

Jeremiah Wheeler had a hit and an RBI; Buchsbaum had a hit and two runs; Whigham contributed a hit and a run; Gregory had a run and RBI; Blenco had a run; Elijah Wheeler had a hit, run and two RBI; Smith chipped in with a hit, three runs and an RBI; Card scored a run; Canfield added a hit, run and three RBI; and Mikels and Tirinato drove in one run apiece.

Owego used six pitchers. Canfield and Elijah Wheeler pitched one inning each with no runs allowed, and Tirinato gave up one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings. The trio combined for eight of the staff's 10 strikeouts

Who says 13 is unlucky? With the title on the line and U-E leading 11-4, Owego went to work, scoring 13 runs in the bottom of the third inning.

They would add two in the fourth, then put the game away with six in the fifth.

Canfield went 4-for-4 with a double, four runs and six RBI; and Blenco smacked an inside-the-park home run. He finished with three runs and two RBI.

Elijah Wheeler was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and four RBI; and Whigham was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI; and Gregory went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Card contributed four runs; Buchsbaum had a triple, run and three RBI; Tirinato had a hit, run and two RBI; Jeremiah Wheeler had a hit, run and RBI; Camden Thole had a run and two RBI; Diedrich and Smith each scored twice.

Elijah Wheeler, Gregory and Card allowed just six earned runs, allowing a combined nine hits and eight walks while fanning seven.
