YOUTH BASEBALL: OWEGO (BEYER) WINS OWEGO LITTLE LEAGUE TOURNAMENT 12U POOL PLAY OPENER (16 PHOTOS) (2019-07-02)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — Owego (Beyer) overcame a shaky start to win its Owego Little League 12U Tournament pool play opener Tuesday.

Owego gave up five runs in the bottom of the first inning, then scored 10 straight en route to a 13-9 victory over Vestal (Burdick).

An error, four consecutive walks and a single got Owego rolling in the second before Vestal could record an out. Then, three straight singles, one accompanied by an error, helped the local boys rack up eight runs before their time at bat ended.

A single, two walks and two errors helped push the lead to 10-5.

Vestal picked up a run in the fourth, but had a runner thrown out at the plate and left two others stranded in scoring position.

Owego responded by scoring three more runs in the fifth on three singles and two walks, increasing its advantage to 13-6.

Vestal got three runs back in its final at-bats thanks to a two-run triple.

The outcome looked like it might go the other way early as back-to-back singles followed by a trio of consecutive walks helped Vestal light up the scoreboard in the first. An error and a two-out single also aided the green and gold to a 5-0 lead.

Devin Card and Noah Christ had multiple hits to lead Owego. Card was 2-for-3 with two runs and Christ went 2-for-4 with a run. Jack Buchsbaum was 1-for-1 with three runs, Matthew Lewis was 1-for-2, Tyler Lewis went 1-for-3, and Chris Ward was 1-for-4 with a run.

Parker Jenkins and Zach Hammond contributed two runs apiece, and Sam Sherwood and Sam Beyer chipped in with one run each.

Owego faces Chenango Forks (Harkness) at 5:30 p.m. today on Beuter Field.
