OWEGO — Vestal Post 89 put together a pair of late surges to score a 9-5 victory over Owego-Tioga County Post 401 in American Legion action here Monday.
Trailing, 2-1, Vestal plated four runs in the top of the fifth to grab the lead on a home run, triple and two RBI singles.
Post 89 tacked on four more runs in the sixth on three singles and a pair of walks to push its advantage to 9-2.
O-TC attempted a comeback, but was only able to manage a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Brandon Hoyt, Jack Symons and Karson Tofte delivered consecutive singles in the sixth, and Hoyt scored on an error by the center fielder of the bat of Joe Higgins.
In the seventh, Nate Bennett led off with a base hit, Ryan Johnson was hit by a pitch and both players scored on wild pitches.
Owego picked up its first run in the first after Dylan Simpson took one for the team, moved to third on a Johnson ground out and scored on a Jason Kithcart double.
O-TC went up 2-1 in the third after Kithcart doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an error by the catcher.
Kithcart went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, and Tofte was 2-for-3. Hoyt was 1-for-2 with run and Kyle Labarge was 1-for-2. Symons went 1-for-3, Bennett contributed a hit and a run, and Simpson and Johnson scored one run apiece.
Vestal pounded out 12 hits and walked five times.
