NICHOLS — Megan Holloway can add horse racing to her list of talents. A field hockey standout who will be taking her skills to Morrisville State College, the Owego Free Academy senior won the 2nd Annual “Scholarship Race” for local high school seniors at Tioga Downs Casino Resort here Sunday.

Holloway bested a field which included Cecilia Lapierre of Corning-Painted Post High School, Horseheads' High School's Christopher Enright, Olivia Hopko of Maine-Endwell High School and Zachary Middaugh from Elmira High School. 

Tioga Downs Casino Resort, the Southern Tier Harness Horseman’s Association, and the Harness Horse Breeders’ of NYS all joined together again to sponsor and host the event. Each of the competitors received a check for $1,700 to put toward their college education.

At Morrisville, Holloway will be majoring in Equine Business Management.
Middaugh, the runner-up, will be attending Corning Community College and majoring in Biology, then he plans on moving on to Veterinarian School.
Enright placed third and will be attending Binghamton University and majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
Fourth-place finisher Lapierre will also start off close to home at Corning Community College, majoring in Biology. She plans on moving on to Veterinarian School.
Hopko is heading to the University of Buffalo and majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

According to a press release from Tioga Downs, they contacted five area high schools to select one distinguished graduating senior to participate in the event. The selected students met with a horse trainer at Tioga Downs Casino Resort three Saturdays before the race to ensure safety and understanding of the basics of horse racing.
