MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. — Newark Valley’s Marissa Silba competed in one of the first races of the day Saturday at the NYSPHSAA Track & Field Championships. Even though it was late morning, the sun’s heat was already beginning to beat down heavily on competitors and fans alike.
Silba would place 16th in the Division II 2,000-meter steeplechase. She posted a time of 7:37.54.
“I didn’t do good,” she said. “I was probably like 12 seconds slower than my previous race.
“In my previous race, I had no competition, so I thought I should have done better today.”
Silba actually got off to a strong start running in a small pack at the head of the field after her first lap, but faded on the echidna lap and was unable to gain back the ground she had lost.
While the heat may have played a role somewhat to her showing, Silba looked at herself as the major contributing factor.
“I think it was more just my mental strength wasn’t up to par today,” she stated.
