IAC SOFTBALL: WAVERLY STRONG IN VICTORY OVER NEWARK VALLEY (16 PHOTOS) (2019-05-02)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY — Once again, Waverly’s Wendi Hammond stole the show. The senior standout twirled yet another no-hit gem and was only an error away from a perfect game in a 16-0 IAC Division 3 victory over Newark Valley here Thursday.

The miscue came from Hammond’s own hand. After fielding a bunt by Emma Graves, her throw to first base was offline, pulling the first baseman off the bag with Graves still a full stride away.

Hammond had struck out 13 consecutive batter to that point. She would fan four of the final five Cardinals as well. Bri Beebe laid down a bunt in the sixth, but Hammond fielded it and her throw to first was good.

NV pitcher Cassify Hoffmier left the game with arm soreness after two innings. She gave up seven runs, five earned, on three hits and six walks.

Ari Sage took the circle for the final four, giving up nine runs, eight earned, on five hits and eight walks. She struck out three and picked up a moral victory of sorts when she fanned Hammond in the sixth. However, it was on a called third strike.

Hammond, who dinged the Cardinals for a trio of home runs in their previous meeting, didn’t get an opportunity to burn NV with the long ball this time. She walked five times, scoring four runs.

Riley Hall came through big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs. Morgan Adams was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Paige Lewis was 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBI. Morgan Lee and Alyssa Sindoni drove in two runs apiece. Hali Jenner and Sabrina Pierce scored two runs each.

NV visits S-VE Monday.
