Tioga County Sports Report
MARATHON — Cooper Davis and Austin Green knocked down four 3-pointers apiece Friday evening, combining for five in the second half as Newark Valley rallied to defeat Marathon, 49-43, in IAC boys basketball crossover action.
“We moved the ball well tonight and guys knocked down open shots,” said coach Scott Stratton. “The guys worked very well together on the offensive end. It was pretty.”
Green nailed two threes in the third quarter and another in the fourth, and scored 11 of his 14 points after the break.
Davis, who canned one trey in every quarter, put in nine of his game-high 15 points in the second half.
“Cooper and Austin did a lot of damage from behind the arc tonight,” Stratton said.”They were both in a shooting groove. We needed it from them and they delivered.
Tim Wojtysiak contributed nine points in the second half as well, finishing the night with 11.
Tristan Veruto paced the Cardinals in the first period, scoring seven points as NV stayed close to the Olympians, trailing just 13-12.
With the exception of one trey each from Davis and Green, NV struggled to score in the second frame, but only trailed, 21-18, at halftime.
Six points from Green, five by Wojtysiak and four from Davis led the Cardinals’ comeback in the third quarter as they surged ahead, 33-30.
“We moved the ball well tonight and guys knocked down open shots,” said coach Scott Stratton. “The guys worked very well together on the offensive end. It was pretty.
Wojtysiak pulled down nine rebounds to help the NV effort while Davis and Nate Hinckley grabbed seven boards apiece.
Veruto added eight points and Hinckley tacked on a free throw.
“Nate and Tim and Jayton (Thompson) did a great job battling for rebounds with some very physical players,” Stratton said. “Tim had an excellent all-around game. In addition to rebounding, he handled the ball well, finished at the rim and made the extra pass to open teammates. It was a big performance from him.
“Josh (Benjamin) and Tristan and Wyatt (Welch) also played strong roles defensively for us. They were part of the collective that helped us execute the defensive game plan.”
The eight 3-pointers proved to be key as Newark Valley’s free throw shooting offered little assistance in the victory. The Cardinals made just five of 16 free throw attempts.
“We certainly could have closed that game out earlier, but we struggled at the free throw line down the stretch,” said Stratton, whose team went 4-for-12 at the stripe in the final frame.
“Still, tonight was a great way to wrap up the regular season against a good team that put up 80 just a few nights ago,” Stratton said.
