IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY HOLDS OFF NOTRE DAME IN 48-40 WIN (February 12, 2026)
Tioga County Sports ReportNEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley took the early lead, then held off Notre Dame in the second half to pull out a 48-40 win over Notre Dame here Thursday night in IAC South Large School Division girls basketball action.
"The girls played a nice game to get back on track," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
Adrianna Rich knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, while Kam Short scored four points, and Elizabeth Phillips converted an old-fashion three-point play to help the Cardinals to a 13-8 lead after the opening eight minutes.
Short scored seven points in the second quarter as Newark Valley outscored Notre Dame, 9-7, to take a 22-15 lead into the halftime locker room.
Notre Dame outscored NV, 13-10, in the third quarter to close the game to 32-28, heading into the final eight minutes, but the Cardinals closed strong.
Haven Aylesworth and Aubrey Kwiatkowski each knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points apiece, while Short scored four points, and Rich canned another 3-pointer and the Cardinals padded their lead with a 17-13 advantage in the closing stanza.
Short scored 19 points, hauled down 12 rebounds, and blocked eight shots, to go along with four steals and two assists, while Rich had 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, seven boards and three assists, and Phillips had five points, a team-high 16 rebounds, and two blocked shots.
"Kam (Short) had a monster game on both ends of the floor, and it felt like Elizabeth (Short) got every rebound," said Schweiger.
Aylesworth had seven points, three rebounds, and three assists in the win, and Kwiatkowski added six points, four boards and four assists.
Newark Valley will host Watkins Glen Tuesday in an IAC South Large School divisional tiebreaker. The game will follow the JV championship game between Newark Valley and Lansing, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
