IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR DROPS GROTON, EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO 11 GAMES (February 6, 2026)

Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — The Candor girls basketball team ran its winning streak to 11 and finished the home regular season schedule undefeated with a 56-38 IAC Small School crossover victory over Groton here Friday night.

The Coyotes stormed out to an 18-9 first quarter lead on the strength of four 3-point plays. Malley Heidl hit two 3-pointers, Emmi Makie added a trey and a traditional 3-point play to go with two field goals and Megan Williamson earned a bucket in traffic.

Groton would battle back in the second, outscoring Candor 13-8. Makie added four more points, joined by a basket from Hazel Ray and another from Williamson.

The Coyotes wasted little time adding to their lead in the third frame as four different scorers found the net. Makie led the charge with three field goals, Williamson added a bucket and a 3-pointer, and Ray and Shawna Conkiln scored a basket each. The score was 41-31 entering the final quarter.

Candor took the final frame, 15-7. Williamson scored seven points, including her second trey of the night. Makie and Heidl added two field goals each.

The Coyotes had three players reach double-digit scoring. Makie led all scorers with 24 points. She added eight rebounds. Williamson put in 16, adding six rebounds, and two steals. Heidl scored 10 with three boards and three steals. Ray scored four with 11 rebounds and Conkiln scored two with 10 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals.

“The girls played very well again tonight even though it seemed sloppy at times,” coach Carl Kanoff said. “Groton is a pretty good team — they have some good athletes and good experience. They definitely outrebounded us. But it was another solid ‘team’ game for us. Emmi and Megan really had to grind out their points and Hazel and Shawna needed grit inside. Malley really got us going with those threes early on. And for the third game in a row Ally (Mesick), Montana (Vorhis), and Deanna (Rich) gave us quality minutes off the bench.”

Candor (13-3) returns Wednesday at Odessa-Montour to finish out the IAC schedule.
