STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: OWEGO FALLS TO CV IN OT, 53-48 (January 1, 2026)
Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — Owego managed just two points in overtime in a 53-48 STAC Central Division boys basketball setback against Chenango Valley here Saturday.
Atlas Boland scored the only OT points for the River Hawks while CV received a 3-pointer from Johnny Paske, a basket by Declan Clark and a pair of free throws from Jayden Jannotti.
The Warriors grabbed a one-point edge, 7-6, in a low-scoring first quarter and maintained it through the half as both teams put up nine points in Q2.
Duke Snyder scored five points in the first half for Owego and Calvin Smith added four more. Paske and Alikhan Murat paced CV with five points each.
The offenses opened up in the third period with Owego outscoring the Warriors, 18-16, to go in front, 33-32.
Smith put up seven points and Carter Rieg tacked on five more with both players knocking down a 3-pointer, and Nolan Card adding a pair of field goals. Murat had six points for the home team while Paske and Johnny Fitzgerald chipped in with one 3-pointer each.
CV tied the game at 46 in the final frame behind a pair of treys from Jannotti, and four points each from Ben Kresge Murat.
The River Hawks countered with five points from Smith, including his third 3-pointer of the game, four points from Carter Rieg and one basket apiece by Card and Duke Snyder.
Murat led all scorers with 15 points, Jannotti added a dozen more and Paske tacked on 11.
Smith recorded 16 points for Owego and Rieg chipped in with 11. Snyder had nine points, Card added eight, and Kinsgton Brainard and Boland had two points apiece.
“A horrific first half by both teams followed by an entertaining and, at times, well-played second half by both squads,” said coach Chris Evans. “We didn't shoot the ball well enough. We got good looks for the most part but we didn't shoot a high enough percentage. And we missed a ton of bunnies in the first half that eventually caught up with us. Obviously, the next three games are vital.”
Owego slips to 5-9 overall and must win two of its final three games to qualify for the postseason. It won’t be an easy task as the River Hawks’ opponents — Delhi, Norwich and Waverly — are state-ranked and have already qualified for the playoffs.
