IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR TURNS AWAY TIOGA UPSET BID (January 27, 2026)

Tioga County Sports Report
CANDOR — Candor turned away an upset bid by Tioga to post a 60-44 win in IAC South Small School girls basketball action here Tuesday evening.

Tioga stormed out of the gate with an explosive 19-point first quarter and held a lead throughout the first half before Candor rallied for a second-half comeback to seal the victory.

Megan Williamson scored the Coyotes' first eight points as Candor maintained a lead for the first four minutes. The Tigers then scored nine points with under a minute remaining to take the stanza, 19-17.

"They couldn't miss and we were lackadaisical on 50/50 balls, rebounds, and executing the offense,” said Candor coach Carl Kanoff. “That's my fault for not breaking the lull after the snow day and having already played and beaten Tioga three times. I let them relax and changed the game plan from our normal routine and that was a mistake.

“Tioga deserves credit for their improvement and their shooting tonight. Everything went in for them, and we couldn't do much but keep at it on our own end. I'm proud of my girls for being resilient, digging their heels in, and mounting the comeback."

Tioga extended its lead to seven at the six-minute mark of the second quarter. The Coyotes adjusted their defense and Williamson found the net for seven more points to take a 30-30 deadlock into halftime.

The second half proved to be more of what Candor has demonstrated during the course of the season. The Coyotes doubled up the Tigers, 18-9, in the third frame on the strength of 10 points from Emmi Makie and six from Hazel Ray. Williamson laid in the other basket.

The final frame went Candor's way, 12-5. Williamson topped off her game and career-high 27 points with seven more, with Makie adding four, and Ray a free throw.

Irie Lynch led the Tigers with 22 points, which included four 3-pointers.

Williamson hit two threes with her many layups, most coming off a 10-steal performance to log a double-double. She also had three assists. Ray scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Shawna Conklin recorded a unique double-double with 17 rebounds and 11 blocks. She also had two assists and five steals.

Makie scored 24, also recording a double-double with 11 rebounds, with two assists and two steals.

Malley Heidl contributed four rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

Candor, now 10-3 (7-2 IAC) returns to action Friday night to host Newfield for Senior Night. The Coyotes will honor Conklin and Ray.
