IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY GETS DEFENSIVE IN 55-24 WIN OVER DRYDEN (January 27, 2026)

DRYDEN — Newark Valley shut down Dryden early, jumped out to a big lead and cruised to a 55-24 win here Tuesday night in IAC Large School Division girls basketball crossover action.

"The team had another nice defensive performance and the third-quarter surge put the game away," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.

"It gave us the chance to work on some things in the fourth quarter," he added.

Aubrey Kwiatkowski scored seven points, including a late 3-pointer, and Elizabeth Phillips added a 3-pointer to fuel the Cardinals 15-2 first-quarter blitz.

Adrianna Rich knocked down a 3-pointer and score five points in the second quarter, while Kam Short scored four points, and Kwiatkowski dropped in another 3-pointer in a 12-8 spurt that put Newark Valley ahead 27-10 at the halftime intermission.

The Cardinals put to rest any thoughts of a comeback with a 21-4 third-quarter outburst, led by eight points from Short and seven, including a 3-pointer, from rich.

Short led Newark Valley with 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots, and Kwiatkowski had 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, three rebounds, and five steals. 

Rich had 12 points, including two 3-pointers, and one blocked shot in the win, while Haven Aylesworth added seven points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals, and Phillips hauled down seven rebounds.

Newark Valley returns to action Friday when it hosts Whitney Point.
