Tioga County Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Edison rallied from an early deficit to defeat Newark Valley, 58-49, in IAC Large School boys basketball action here Friday, avenging an overtime loss to the Cardinals in December.
“It was a back-and-forth game that didn’t go our way at the end,” coach Scott Stratton said. “We were forced to pressure late in the fourth, and even though we got a couple buckets out of it, we unfortunately gave up more taking the risk. And, they knocked down free throws to help seal it.”
NV jumped ahead in the first quarter, 16-5, as Cooper Davis and Tim Wojtysiak scored seven and five points, respectively. The duo accounted for one 3-pointer each.
Marcquis Bradley sparked the rally with a trio of 3-pointers in the second period as the Spartans narrowed the gap to 26-22 at halftime.
Tristan Veruto was the lone NV player to score more than two points in Q2, making a trey and a free throw.
Mark Cornacchio knocked down a pair of threes in the third quarter and Bradley tacked on five points, including his fourth trey of the game, as Edison surged ahead, 42-38, heading into the final frame.
Veruto drained his second and third three-balls of the game in the third, and Davis added another trey.
Connor Lasko put up seven points to help fend off the Cardinals over the final eight minutes, offsetting four points by Wojtysiak and another trey from Davis.
Bradley led all scorers with 19 points with Lasko close behind with 18. Cornacchio tacked on a dozen markers.
Davis led NV with 16 points and Veruto chipped in with 12 more. Wojtysiak finished with nine points, Nate Hinckley had five, Austin Green pitched in with four, Gabe Benjamin added two and Jayton Thompson tacked on one point.
