BINGHAMTON — Four players scored in double figures as Owego snapped out of a month-long slide, defeating Chenango Forks, 57-48, in STAC Central Division boys basketball action here Saturday.
It took a second-half rally to snap the six-game losing streak, but the River Hawks did it with a shut down defense and solid offense.
Trailing, 34-25, at the half, Owego erupted for 19 third-quarter points while holding the Blue Devils to seven, giving the visitors a 44-41 lead. Kingston Brainard nailed a pair of 3-pointers as he and Nolan Card scored six points apiece. Carter Rieg tacked on five more, including one trey.
Forks managed just seven points again in the final frame while the River Hawks pumped out 13 more.
“A much needed victory for OFA!,” said coach Chris Evans. “Our second-half showcased some of the best basketball we've played this year.
”King Brainard, Carter Reig and Duke Snyder were huge while Nolan Card is beginning to figure things out. Calvin Smith, still fighting illness, was a warrior.”
Snyder put seven of his game-high 15 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but Lincoln Rabb and Terenzio Silvestri countered with eight and six points, respectively, to give Forks a 19-15 advantage.
The Devils extended their lead in the second period behind seven points from Brady Vaseleck while Smith had five for Owego.
Forks drained seven threes in the first half, but managed just two after intermission.
Joining Snyder in the double-digit club were Rieg with a dozen points, Card with 11 and King with 10. Smith contributed seven points to the win and Noah Christ tacked on two.
Brainard made three baskets from beyond the arc, while Rieg and Smith added one trey each.
Liam Spalik paced Forks with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Silvestri chipped in with 11 points and one trey, Vaseleck added 10 points and three threes, Rabb had two threes and eight points, and Sam Paske tacked on five points.
